DR. SANGRA
Growing up on Vancouver Island , in a valley town called Port Alberni , I was surrounded by mountains and the wildlife of that area. Being surrounded by old growth forest and being a part of its rhythms and cycles I automatically was aware of the significance of plants, animals, water, air etc… Later as I got older I had the privilege of learning about the medicinal qualities of these plants that were used by the aboriginal people. It was then that I further understood the relationship and significance between the leaves, seeds, oils , tinctures and various food combinations, that I saw my mom using for healing our family from various ailments.
Having the privilege to witness the uses of Natural Medicine, in the form of traditional medicines from India called Ayruvedic Medicine , I felt a natural connection to commit myself to the profession of Naturopathic Medicine.
Mind=Body
There’s an intimate interaction between the two to maintain the body in a state of homeostasis or balance.
To maintain the balance one must integrate these nurturing elements into their lifestyle:
-
Nutrient rich diet that is tailored to each individuals needs at the present time.
-
Exercise that is tailored to each individuals needs at the present time.
-
Sun
-
Fresh Air
-
Rest and Sleep
-
Stillness in the form of meditation or other methods to quiet the mind and relax the body.
Nurture=Nature
Just like the mind body connection there is a nurture nature connection.
We are not separate from nature. As nature has cycles and rhythms so does the human body. There is a strong connection between the cycles of nature and our human body and mind, such as the seasons or the moon. For example when the seasons change so does the human body and the plants and foods of that season have the ability to support the needs of the human body at that time.
In nurturing ourselves our vitality is strong keeping us in a positive state of health. But when our vitality is lowered and a negative disease state is reached we can use the assistance of nature to heal the whole person.
As a Naturopathic Doctor I reinforce all the self care elements. But I also utilize the medicinal qualities of nature to assist the body to what it is always striving for BALANCE. To achieve this balance is the body continuously going through an active HEALING process to correct any dysfunction. However, at times this process may need assistance. Naturopathic Medicine has the ability to assist the body’s innate corrective efforts by removing obstacles to these processes.
As a Naturopathic Doctor I am trained to co-operate with the healing powers of nature.
I focus on finding the underlying cause(s) that resulted in the development of the disease. Understanding the root cause and how the body’s internal forces are active against disease is the initial step to restoring HEALTH.
Mind, body and spirit must be assessed to see where the imbalances lie that allowed the disease state to arise. DISEASE is not something that just happens, it is a warning that the system, the body and mind system, is in a state of imbalance. Disease is the endpoint of a process in the individuals system. Therefore ILLNESS is an the expression of a systemic problem.
With the help of conventional diagnostic testing such as hormone and allergy blood testing, hair analysis and traditional forms of analysis, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine both the doctor and patient can have a better understanding of causative disease patterns. With these findings an individually tailored treatment plan can be developed that support or enhance a patient’s overall health.
Naturopathic therapies can be used in coordination with other health practitioner to give the best overall treatment.
